Chapter 20

Blaise spent the night. I found that I slept peacefully, despite his presence being more than a little distracting, with us fooling around a second time at some point in the night when our touches became unbearably heated.

The next morning, he took me to get my mark. I had the artist put it on my collarbone, tossing Blaise a knowing grin as he bit his lip hungrily in response.

The prick of the needle felt like nothing more than a tiny scratch against my skin; like I’d been itching a little too hard, and before I knew it, it was over. The artist uttered some words in a gruff language I didn’t understand with his hand placed over my mark, and I felt a swell of pulsating energy — the same energy I’d felt when touching Blaise’s. In an instant, it faded, though if I touched the mark and focused, I could still feel it there, distantly.

“Is that it?” I asked Blaise, who nodded, visibly more relaxed. I thanked the artist as Blaise guided me out of the room and to the courtyard. He gave my hand a squeeze and winked, slipping away as I waited for my magical lessons. I sat on the bench, wringing the bracelet on my wrist, and brushing my fingers over the newly bandaged mark as I waited. Patience was never my strong suit.

“Kate. There you are, thank gods.” Darrya rushed to embrace me. Finlay came to a stop a short distance behind her, flashing me a surprisingly shy smile.

“I am so sorry for what I said last night. I should have realized. It wasn’t my news to bring to your attention.” She shook her head. “I feel so terrible about it. Please tell me you’ll forgive me?”

I looked into her pleading brown eyes and gave her a soft smile. “There’s nothing to forgive, Darrya. I know you’d never intentionally do anything to hurt me.”

She exhaled a deep breath, clearly relieved. “Good. Because last night, I was thinking about someone else who may have an idea of your heritage. But it involves a trip.” She glanced over her shoulder at Finlay. “To Daersill.”

I remembered the name from our conversation the other night – her homeland. Finlay’s, too.

“What’s there?” I asked, curious.

“The grand duke, Lachlan. He lives in their capital city, Leven. He is perhaps one of the oldest Fae alive, and he’s a seanchaí like Kipp. If anyone would have information we won’t find in books, it’s him.”

“Can we trust him?” I asked hesitantly. Darrya twirled a strand of hair in her hand thoughtfully.

“Lachlan, yes. As long as his sons aren’t visiting.”

At my raised brows, she explained further. “They’re a different story – all they do is party and fuck. They’re set to oversee Daersill and rule their original land, Brytham – if they can ever grow up enough for their father to relinquish his seat to them.”

Finlay shook his head, taking a cigarette out and lighting it. Darrya shifted uncomfortably and continued. “I was
